Type 5 Gynecomastia - Significant Breast Roll

Definition

Breast tissue - extends into axilla

Nipple position - ≥ 2 cm below chest fold

Chest fold shape - significant skin excess, breast roll extends to back of arm pit

Most common demographic - overweight, massive weight loss

Type 5 patients are typically those who have suffered with being overweight and/or have experience significant weight loss. The severity of the problem can worsen with age, weight loss or a combination of both. It is not uncommon to feel hopeless and trapped by your body. Type 5 patients are arguably the happiest of all following plastic surgery. The procedure is truly life changing and often times inspires men to do things in their lives they never thought were possible. There becomes a sense of empowerment and excitement about the future.

Treating Type 5 Gynecomastia requires extensive experience and understanding of the complexity associated with it. The horizontal excess skin and fat in the arm pit and breast roll is often overlooked. Unfortunately, when not treated or under-treated, it creates a strange disproportion when the chest is flattened and the arm pits look bulky and the breast roll is still present.
